The forests of Borneo are under the threat of disappearance due to the overexploitation they suffer for different reasons. Because of this, endemic species like the orang-utan are experimenting a risky relapse. International Animal Rescue conducts the laudable task of rehabilitating orang-utans that have been left orphans or injured. They give them the health care they require and prepare them for an introduction, when possible, that actually has a high rate of success. Young orang-utans are very mother-dependent primates that would spend up to 7 years with their mothers. Due to the lack of this contact, these little ones have to go through a series of stages where they live in semi-liberty at IAR. In this way, they acquire those abilities that they will so need for their complete reintroduction into the wild.
