Due to its geographic location, most of the Indonesian territory was covered by tropical forests. However, due to various reasons, Indonesia is currently experiencing one of the most intense deforestation in the world. The cultivation of palm oil is perhaps the most important of these reasons, although the timber industry and mining are also causing the loss of the original forest. During 2015, coinciding with a particularly dry year, Borneo suffered some the worst fires occurred in decades that destroyed some of the oldest and lush forests on the planet.
